What?
Designed and built an automated manufacturing quality-control system that detects, inspects, and sorts parts by dimensional tolerance and color, providing a low-cost alternative to manual inspection.
How?
- Developed a conveyor-based mechatronic system integrating part detection, positioning, inspection, and automated sorting into a continuous process
- Designed a 3D-printed go/no-go gauge and motor-driven rack-and-pinion mechanism to perform dimensional tolerance checks using touch-sensor feedback
- Integrated ultrasonic, color, and touch sensors with LEGO EV3 motors, applying motor control to coordinate conveyor movement, sensor positioning, inspection, and automated part handling
- Programmed modular ROBOTC control logic to automate detection, positioning, inspection, pass/fail feedback, and sorting while allowing users to select the desired inspection mode
- Tested and iteratively refined mechanical and software subsystems, adjusting motor speeds, sensor positioning, and inspection alignment to improve repeatability and reliability
Result
- Achieved 100% color-sorting accuracy (20/20) and 95% dimensional-sorting accuracy (19/20).
- Achieved 95% part-detection accuracy and a 100% ease-of-use rating from 16 test users, demonstrating reliable operation and an intuitive interface
